Package Overview What this trip is, in a nutshell
Two experiences set it apart from any standard circuit tour. On Day 2 you leave the vehicle entirely for a guided walking safari in Arusha National Park, accompanied by an armed ranger - the bush at ground level, where tracks, dung, birdsong, and the smell of crushed leaves tell a story no game drive can. On Day 3 you stay out after dark for a night game drive in Tarangire, when genets, civets, bushbabies, and hunting lions take over a landscape you thought you already knew. Few Tanzanian itineraries include either; this one includes both.
At its heart lie six Serengeti nights across two distinct regions. Five are spent between the Central Serengeti's kopje-studded big-cat country and two nights in the quieter Western Serengeti near the Grumeti - a region most short itineraries never reach, where the migration passes through around June and where solitude at a sighting is still ordinary rather than rare. Splitting the Serengeti this way is the single greatest luxury a long safari can offer.
Wildlife possibilities span everything the north holds: lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, hippo, crocodile, and - with luck on the crater floor - the critically endangered black rhino, completing the Big Five. Arusha National Park adds black-and-white colobus monkeys and flamingos; Lake Manyara adds its famous tree-climbing lions and groundwater forest. Sightings are never guaranteed in the wild, and we will not pretend otherwise. What twelve days buys you is the thing short safaris cannot: second chances.
You travel entirely privately in a dedicated 4x4 Land Cruiser with pop-up roof, led by a professional English-speaking Tanzanian guide-driver who stays with you from the first morning to the last. Over twelve days that relationship becomes the trip's quiet centre - a guide who learns what you love and plans around it.
Accommodation blends comfortable lodges with authentic tented camps, including a luxury tented camp inside Tarangire and another in the Western Serengeti, so that on most nights you sleep within the wilderness rather than beside it. Seasonal flexibility is built in throughout: between December and March the Serengeti nights shift south toward Ndutu and the calving grounds; between July and October they can shift north toward the Mara River. Your safari follows the animals, not a printed map.

An easy arrival day: meet-and-greet at Kilimanjaro International Airport, a private transfer through coffee country to Arusha, time to shake off the flight, and a full pre-expedition briefing covering the twelve days ahead.

Depending on your flight schedule: arrival formalities at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where a Splendor Safari representative welcomes you in the arrivals hall with a name board and chilled drinking water. The included transfer begins your journey.
Afternoon
Private transfer along the Arusha-Moshi corridor through coffee farms and roadside markets, with Mount Meru rising ahead and - on clear days - Kilimanjaro's snows behind you. Check in at your lodge and unwind after the long flight; the gardens and pool are the right medicine for jet lag, and early arrivals may wish to visit the Cultural Heritage Centre for East African art and craft.

A short drive to Ngongongare Gate, where you meet your armed park ranger for the guided walking safari. On foot the park changes character entirely: you follow buffalo tracks in soft ground, learn to age dung, hear the alarm call of a bushbuck before you see it. Black-and-white colobus monkeys leap through the canopy overhead - Arusha National Park is one of the most reliable places in northern Tanzania to see them.
Afternoon
Picnic lunch overlooking the Momella Lakes, a chain of shallow alkaline lakes whose colours shift from jade to steel blue, where flamingos gather seasonally alongside hippos, waterbuck and giraffes browsing the shorelines. Afterwards, return to the vehicle for a game drive around the rim of the Ngurdoto Crater - a forest-walled miniature caldera - scanning the swampy floor below for buffalo herds, with the flanks of Mount Meru rising behind.
Evening
Return to Arusha, relax by the pool, and enjoy dinner arrangements at the lodge before an early start tomorrow. Tonight is the last night of city comfort for over a week.

A full afternoon among Tarangire's baobabs and elephant herds, a night inside the park, and then the itinerary's rarest inclusion - an after-dark night game drive under spotlight, when a completely different set of animals takes over.

Depart Arusha west across the open Maasai Steppe, arriving at Tarangire's gate mid-morning. The park announces itself immediately: thousand-year-old baobabs standing over golden grassland, and the Tarangire River drawing wildlife from every direction.
Afternoon
Game drive along the river circuit, where Tarangire's famous elephant herds - among the largest concentrations in East Africa - come to drink and dust-bathe, with a hot picnic lunch at a shaded site above the valley. Continue through acacia woodland and the Silale Swamp fringes, watching for lion draped in sausage trees and dry-country specials such as fringe-eared oryx and gerenuk, then check in to your tented camp inside the park in time for a shower and sundowner.
Evening
After dinner, the night game drive: Tarangire is one of very few northern-circuit parks where after-dark driving is permitted. Under a spotlight the bush transforms - genets picking along branches, civets crossing the track, bushbabies' eyes glowing in the acacias, springhares bounding through the grass, and, with fortune, lion or leopard beginning the night's hunt.

Day description
A dawn farewell drive through Seronera - often among the most productive hours of the trip - then east past Naabi Hill and back over the Ngorongoro highlands to Karatu, and the first proper bed after six nights under canvas.

Afternoon
Continue east across the short-grass plains toward Naabi Hill, where cheetah are frequently seen, with a relaxed picnic lunch and time at the park information centre before exiting. Then climb back into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, tracing the crater rim as the light turns gold over the Malanja Depression and Maasai cattle head home, before descending to Karatu.
Evening
Arrive at your highland lodge for a hot shower, a garden sundowner, and a proper dinner. After six nights under canvas, the comfort lands well.

Day description
A pre-dawn descent 600 metres onto the caldera floor, among the first vehicles down, for up to five hours inside the world's largest intact volcanic caldera and its 20,000-25,000 large animals.
Morning
Pre-dawn start to be among the first vehicles down the 600-metre descent road as mist lifts off the caldera floor. Within these walls live an estimated 20,000-25,000 large animals: lion prides, huge-tusked elephant bulls, buffalo, spotted hyena clans, and the flamingo-fringed Lake Magadi - plus one of Tanzania's best chances, never a certainty, of seeing black rhino and completing the Big Five.
Afternoon
Picnic brunch at the hippo-pool picnic site, one of the most memorable lunch spots in Africa, then continue through the Lerai fever-tree forest and across the crater grasslands. Final crater loops before ascending the exit road in the mid-afternoon, with time at a rim viewpoint to look down on where you have just spent the day.
Evening
Return to your lodge near the crater for a relaxed final safari dinner - a good evening to look back through eleven days of photographs with your guide.

Second stay at the Karatu lodge, under an hour from the Ngorongoro Crater - positioned for the pre-dawn crater descent and, next morning, a short run down to Lake Manyara's gate. Alternatives: Ngorongoro Rhino Lodge; Tloma Lodge.
Crater mornings are genuinely cold - often below 10 degrees C on the rim - so dress in layers you can shed as the floor warms. Vehicles are limited to six hours on the crater floor by regulation, which is why the early start matters.

Day description
A closing morning game drive through Lake Manyara's groundwater forest, flamingo shallows and acacia woodland, then the drive along the Rift Valley escarpment to Kilimanjaro International Airport.
Morning
A short descent from Karatu brings you to Lake Manyara's gate. The game drive begins in lush groundwater forest alive with baboon troops and blue monkeys, then opens onto the lake shore, where flamingos, pelicans and storks gather seasonally in their thousands.
Afternoon
Work the acacia woodland between forest and shore - the park that made tree-climbing lions famous, where elephants and giraffes drift through the same groves - with a hot lunch at a picnic site beneath the Rift wall, or in Mto wa Mbu. Then depart for Arusha along the Great Rift Valley escarpment, with an optional stop at Mto wa Mbu's market or a curio gallery, and continue to Kilimanjaro International Airport on the included transfer with comfortable margin for check-in.
Evening
For late-departure flights, dinner is arranged in Arusha before your transfer. Otherwise, farewell at the airport - or the beginning of a Zanzibar extension.
