Package Overview What this trip is, in a nutshell
Wings, Plains & Villages compresses the finest of northern Tanzania into four days by removing the part most itineraries waste: the long drive in. You fly from Zanzibar to a Serengeti airstrip in the morning, and the safari begins the moment your guide meets the aircraft. From there the journey unfolds eastward - two nights on the plains, a dawn descent into the Ngorongoro Crater, and a final day among the farms and workshops of Mto wa Mbu before flying home from Arusha.

The Central Serengeti is where the wildlife half of this safari lives. Granite kopjes rise from open grassland; the Seronera River draws game in every season; and the valley supports resident lion prides alongside one of the highest leopard densities anywhere in Africa. Two nights here mean two dawns and two dusks in the same rich country - and the chance to return in the morning to whatever you glimpsed at last light.

The Ngorongoro Crater follows: a 600-metre descent onto the floor of the world's largest intact caldera, where an estimated 20,000 to 25,000 large animals live within a single ring of walls. Lion prides, huge-tusked elephant bulls, buffalo, hyena clans, and the flamingo-fringed Lake Magadi are all here, along with one of Tanzania's best chances - never a certainty - of seeing black rhino and completing the Big Five.

Then, deliberately, the safari changes register. The final morning is spent in Mto wa Mbu, a Rift Valley town where more than a hundred ethnic groups farm the same fertile ground beneath the escarpment. You walk through banana plantations and rice paddies, watch woodcarvers and painters at work, ride a tuk-tuk through the back lanes, and eat a Swahili lunch cooked by a local family. After three days of watching animals from a vehicle, meeting people on foot is a genuinely different pleasure - and it is what most guests end up talking about at home.

Accommodation is luxury throughout: a luxury tented camp inside the Serengeti for the first two nights, and a characterful luxury farm lodge in the Ngorongoro highlands for the third, set among coffee and vegetable gardens that supply its own kitchen.

You travel entirely privately in a dedicated 4x4 Land Cruiser with pop-up roof, led by a professional English-speaking Tanzanian guide-driver who meets your flight and stays with you to the end. Two features set this itinerary apart from the rest of our collection: solo travelers are welcome without needing to join a group, and there is no minimum age - infants and young children can travel, with pacing adjusted to suit them.

Island to Plains - Flying Into the Serengeti

Day description

The long drive in is removed entirely: a morning flight from Zanzibar to a Serengeti airstrip, a game drive that begins at the runway, and a full afternoon in the Seronera Valley before settling into luxury canvas inside the park.

Morning

An early transfer from your Zanzibar hotel to the airport, where our representative sees you checked in. The light aircraft lifts off the island, crosses the Indian Ocean coast and the long brown sweep of eastern Tanzania, and eventually the Rift Valley opens beneath the wing. Brief stops at other airstrips are normal on this route.

Afternoon

Land at a Serengeti airstrip where your guide and private 4x4 are waiting. The safari begins at the runway - within minutes you are on a game drive, often with giraffe or zebra visible before the propellers have stopped - with a picnic lunch at a scenic site, or a hot lunch at camp if the flight lands early. A full afternoon game drive follows through the Seronera Valley: granite kopjes rising from open grassland, umbrella acacias, and the river loops where leopards drape along sausage-tree branches. Your guide reads fresh tracks and radio traffic, building a picture for tomorrow.

Evening

Arrive at your luxury tented camp as the light softens. A hot shower, a sundowner by the fire, and dinner under canvas. There is no fence between you and the Serengeti; after dark a member of camp staff walks you between the mess and your tent.

About this stay

Genuine luxury canvas in the heart of big-cat country, inside Central Serengeti National Park (Seronera area). Two nights in one camp remove every packing cycle from a short trip and win both dawns on the plains. Alternatives: Signature Serengeti Luxury Tented Safari Camp; Serengeti Heritage Luxury Tented Camp.

A Full Day in the Seronera Valley

Day description

A whole day in one place with no transfer: a dawn session through the river loops and kopje fields, an unhurried midday, and a second session on different ground. Second night at the same camp.

Morning

A dawn departure with coffee in hand: the Serengeti's finest hour, when lions are finishing the night's work, hyenas are heading home, and cheetahs test the cool air before the heat arrives. Your guide follows fresh tracks and radio reports through the valley's river loops and kopje fields, returning to anything promising from yesterday.

Afternoon

Picnic lunch beneath an acacia, or back to camp for a hot lunch and a rest through the heat - the better option for families with young children, and a genuine luxury on a short trip. Hippo pools and the Maasai kopjes are close by for those who prefer to stay out. A second session follows on different ground: woodland edges where leopard rest through the afternoon, open plains where cheetah hunt, or further south if the migration herds are within reach.

Evening

Sundowner as the plains turn copper, then dinner under canvas beneath a sky that, this far from any town, is extraordinary. Guests marking an occasion can have dinner set privately outside their tent - just tell us at booking.

Day description

A final dawn drive in the Seronera Valley, then east across the plains past Naabi Hill and up into the Ngorongoro highlands to a working farm lodge among coffee bushes and vegetable gardens.

Morning

A final dawn drive through the Seronera Valley - often the most productive hours of the whole trip, and your guide's last chance at anything still missing from your list - before turning east across the plains.

Afternoon

Continue toward Naabi Hill, where cheetah are frequently seen on the open ground, with a relaxed picnic lunch and time at the park information centre before exiting the Serengeti. Then climb into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, tracing the crater rim as the light turns gold over the Malanja Depression and Maasai cattle head home. There is usually time for a rim viewpoint stop - a first look down at tomorrow morning from 600 metres above it - before descending into the highlands.

Evening

Arrive at your luxury farm lodge, set among coffee bushes and vegetable gardens that supply its own kitchen. A hot shower, a fireside drink in genuinely cool highland air, and an early dinner ahead of the pre-dawn descent.

Day description

The fullest day of the trip and deliberately so: a pre-dawn crater descent, then down the escarpment to Mto wa Mbu for a walking tour, tuk-tuk ride and Swahili lunch, before the drive east to Arusha.

Morning

A pre-dawn start to be among the first vehicles down the 600-metre descent road as mist lifts off the crater floor. Within these walls live an estimated 20,000-25,000 large animals: lion prides, huge-tusked elephant bulls, buffalo, spotted hyena clans, and the flamingo-fringed Lake Magadi - plus one of Tanzania's best chances, never a certainty, of seeing black rhino and completing the Big Five.

Afternoon

Ascend the exit road in the late morning and descend the escarpment to Mto wa Mbu, a Rift Valley town where more than a hundred ethnic groups farm the same fertile ground. A local guide leads you on foot through banana plantations and rice paddies, into woodcarving and painting workshops, and past the market - followed by a tuk-tuk ride through the back lanes and a Swahili lunch cooked by a local family. Continue east along the Rift Valley escarpment toward Arusha, with an optional final stop at a curio gallery.
