The week opens gently. Day 1 begins on foot with a guided walking safari in Arusha National Park, where colobus monkeys move through montane forest and the bush is met at ground level rather than through a window. Tarangire follows with its baobabs and elephant herds, then Lake Manyara with groundwater forest, flamingo flats, and its celebrated tree-climbing lions.
Then the itinerary turns north into country few visitors see. The road to Lake Natron drops into the Rift Valley proper - dust, lava fields, and Maasai bomas - and ends at a lake so alkaline that little survives in it except the algae that turn it crimson and feed East Africa's largest breeding population of lesser flamingos. Above it stands Ol Doinyo Lengai, the Maasai's Mountain of God and the world's only active carbonatite volcano. From Natron a rough, spectacular track runs west into the Northern Serengeti, arriving at the Mara River from a direction almost nobody uses.
Two nights in the Northern Serengeti and one in the Central Serengeti give the plains proper time. Between roughly late July and early October the northern herds gather at the Mara River; year-round the region offers lion, leopard, elephant, and a solitude the central park cannot match. The Ngorongoro Crater follows with a dawn descent onto the caldera floor and one of Tanzania's best chances of black rhino, completing the Big Five.
The journey closes at Lake Eyasi with a respectful, community-arranged morning among the Hadzabe and the neighbouring Datoga - a hunting walk at first light, a look at how bows and arrows are actually made, and a conversation about a way of living that predates farming itself. It is the most human day of the trip and, for many guests, the one they talk about longest.

On foot the bush works differently: you follow buffalo tracks in soft ground, learn to read browse lines and dung, and hear a bushbuck's alarm call before you see what caused it. Afternoon
Picnic lunch overlooking the Momella Lakes, a chain of shallow alkaline lakes shifting from jade to steel blue, where flamingos gather seasonally alongside hippos, waterbuck and giraffes - a gentle first taste of the soda-lake country you will meet properly at Natron. Afterwards, return to the vehicle for a game drive around the rim of the Ngurdoto Crater, a forest-walled miniature caldera, scanning the swampy floor below for buffalo herds with the flanks of Mount Meru rising behind.

Crater mornings are cold - often below 10 degrees C on the rim - so dress in layers you can shed as the floor warms. Vehicles are limited to six hours on the crater floor by regulation, which is why the early start earns its place.

Day description
The most human day of the trip: a first-light hunting walk with a Hadzabe group, a visit to Datoga blacksmiths forging arrowheads, then the drive back to Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport where the journey ends.
Morning
A very early start down the escarpment to Lake Eyasi, arriving at first light to join a Hadzabe hunting group - the timing matters, because this is when they actually hunt. You walk with them through dry acacia bush as they track, use handmade bows, and gather roots and berries, communicating in a language built partly of clicks. The Hadzabe are among the last hunter-gatherer peoples on Earth, and this is their ordinary morning, not a performance.
Afternoon
Continue to a nearby Datoga settlement, where blacksmiths forge arrowheads and jewellery from scrap metal using techniques passed down for generations, and the women demonstrate beadwork. Late breakfast or brunch afterwards, then begin the drive back east through Karatu and Mto wa Mbu along the Rift Valley escarpment, with an optional final stop at a market or curio gallery, then on to Arusha or directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport on the included transfer.
Evening
Departure - or the beginning of an extension: many guests continue to Zanzibar's beaches, or take a final night in Arusha before a long-haul flight.

A post-safari day room or an extra night in Arusha can be arranged on request (day rooms from approx. USD 90 per room), and many guests continue to Zanzibar from here.
