Species profile

About the striped hyena

Far scarcer and far more retiring than its spotted cousin, the striped hyena reaches the southern edge of its range in northern and central Tanzania. It is a solitary nocturnal wanderer that covers long distances in a night, and most guides count a clear sighting among the highlights of a season.

It is largely a scavenger and gatherer rather than a hunter, and its long mane, pale striped coat and pointed ears make it unmistakable in a spotlight. Serengeti and Ruaha offer the best chances, always after dark.

Life in the wild

Behavior & relationships

Behavior

Solitary and nocturnal. Raises its mane to look larger when threatened, and caches food. Ranges widely along dry watercourses and tracks.

Social life

Usually alone or in a small family group. Pairs may share a den and both parents help provision the cubs.

What makes it remarkable

Special features

The erectile black-and-white mane along the back is a threat display. Wild fruit forms a real part of the diet, which is unusual among hyenas.
