Package Overview What this trip is, in a nutshell
Follow the green-season migration of Tanzania from the short-grass plains of Ndutu to the wildlife-rich Ngorongoro Crater.

Designed for travellers who want a focused Great Migration experience without rushing through too many parks, this six-day private safari places the seasonal Ndutu plains at the centre of the journey. After a comfortable arrival night in Arusha, you travel through the Great Rift Valley and the Ngorongoro Highlands into the southern Serengeti ecosystem, where fresh grass and seasonal water often draw large concentrations of wildebeest, zebra and gazelles between late December and March. Predators such as cheetahs, lions, hyenas and jackals are also commonly associated with this productive landscape, although every wildlife encounter remains unpredictable.

Two nights at a seasonal tented camp allow your guide to respond to current herd locations rather than follow a rigid sightseeing timetable. The route then shifts to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area for a cooler highland night before an early descent into the Ngorongoro Crater. The safari ends with a final Arusha night, which gives international travellers a more comfortable departure day and removes the risk of combining an intensive crater safari with a tight long-haul flight connection.

The service style is private and personalised: your party travels in its own 4x4 safari vehicle with a professional English-speaking guide-driver, flexible photo stops, drinking water, airport transfers and meals as stated. Accommodation follows a premium mid-range pattern combining an Arusha lodge, a well-positioned seasonal Ndutu tented camp and a tented camp near Ngorongoro.

The value here comes from concentrating safari time where the seasonal story is most relevant rather than spreading it thin across parks that are not central to the calving season.

This itinerary is designed around seasonal patterns, not guarantees. Calving concentrations, predator encounters, particular species, migration movements and river crossings are controlled by nature and cannot be guaranteed.

Welcome to Arusha - Arrival, Rest and Private Safari Briefing

Day description

A private airport meet and transfer into Arusha, a deliberately light afternoon to recover from international travel, and an evening briefing that sets the seasonal Ndutu strategy.

Morning

A Splendor Safari representative meets you at the agreed airport or Arusha location. The transfer is private, so there is no waiting for travellers from another booking. If you arrive early, the drive into Arusha gives an easy introduction to the urban and agricultural landscapes of northern Tanzania.

Afternoon

Check in and settle into your room; lunch is included when arrival timing allows, and travellers arriving later simply move into the afternoon programme without losing any core safari activity. The afternoon is deliberately light - rest after the international journey, organize luggage for the 4x4, and meet your guide for a private briefing covering road conditions, wildlife-viewing etiquette, photography preferences, meal requirements, the seasonal Ndutu strategy and the departure time tomorrow morning. An optional short Arusha market or cultural visit can be arranged if time and energy permit.

Evening

Dinner at the lodge, followed by an early night before the overland journey to Ndutu.

Across the Highlands to Ndutu - Into the Southern Serengeti Ecosystem

Day description

The long westward journey through the Rift Valley corridor and the Ngorongoro Highlands onto the open short-grass plains, turning into a game drive as you enter the Ndutu ecosystem.

Morning

After breakfast, leave Arusha in your private 4x4 and travel west through the Great Rift Valley corridor. The route passes the Mto wa Mbu and Karatu area before climbing into the Ngorongoro Highlands, and subject to timing and weather your guide can pause at a suitable viewpoint for photographs and a short orientation to the conservation landscape.

Afternoon

Continue across the Ngorongoro Conservation Area toward the open short-grass plains, with lunch taken at an appropriate picnic point or as a packed meal depending on gate timing and current wildlife movement. The scenery gradually changes from cultivated highlands to broad volcanic grasslands and acacia-fringed seasonal lakes. Enter the Ndutu ecosystem and begin the first game drive en route to camp: during the calving-season window your guide looks for areas of fresh grazing and current herd concentrations rather than following a fixed loop.

Evening

Arrive at camp, settle into your tent, enjoy the sunset atmosphere over the plains and have dinner.

Full-Day Ndutu Calving Plains - Flexible Wildlife and Photography

Day description

A whole day on the calving plains with no transfer to make, so the guide can choose each sector from current wildlife information rather than a fixed loop.

Morning

Depart early while temperatures are cooler and the light is soft. Your guide selects the first sector of the day based on recent wildlife information, road conditions and your interests. The Ndutu mosaic of open plains, woodland, marsh and seasonal lakes supports a wide range of wildlife, and during the core calving period newborn wildebeest and large grazing herds may be present with notable predator activity - though both timing and location vary naturally.

Afternoon

Depending on wildlife activity, return to camp for a relaxed lunch or stay out in the field with a picnic. The private format lets you choose between a long photographic session at one sighting and a broader search across several habitats, and your guide maintains respectful viewing distances and avoids obstructing animal movement. Continue across the plains looking for cheetah habitat, lion territories, spotted hyenas, jackals, raptors, kori bustards and mixed plains-game herds, with the final drive timed to use the afternoon light well.

Evening

Dinner and a quiet night in camp. Wildlife may pass near unfenced bush camps, so follow the staff instructions when walking after dark.

Last Morning on the Plains - Ndutu to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Day description

A final Ndutu game drive in the cool hours, then the transfer east into the cooler, higher Ngorongoro highlands, positioned for tomorrow's crater descent.

Morning

Enjoy a final Ndutu game drive, using the cooler hours either to revisit the most productive area from the previous day or to explore a new sector. Because migration herds can shift quickly after rain, your guide makes that decision locally rather than promising a specific site in advance.

Afternoon

Return for brunch or lunch, check out and begin the transfer east toward the Ngorongoro highlands. The journey remains scenic and may still produce wildlife encounters as you cross the conservation area. The landscape becomes cooler and more elevated, with rolling grasslands, Maasai pastoral country and views that can open dramatically in clear weather.

Evening

Arrive at camp with time to settle before dinner, and prepare for an early crater descent in the morning.

Ngorongoro Crater Safari - Caldera Wildlife to Arusha

Day description

A descent to the crater floor for around five hours among its grassland, wetland and woodland habitats, then the drive back through Karatu and the Rift Valley to a final Arusha night.

Morning

After an early breakfast, drive to the crater access point and descend into the Ngorongoro Crater as conditions allow. The crater floor holds grassland, wetlands, woodland and freshwater habitats in a relatively compact area, and your guide looks for buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas, lions, elephants and other species. Black rhino are present in the wider crater ecosystem but remain a special and never-guaranteed sighting.

Afternoon

Enjoy a picnic lunch at an authorized site and continue the game drive through different crater-floor habitats - the private vehicle gives flexibility for photography and lets your guide adjust pacing around your interests while respecting exit times and conservation rules. Then ascend from the crater and drive through Karatu and the Rift Valley corridor back to Arusha, with comfort stops as needed.

Evening

Arrive at the lodge for dinner and a final overnight. Relax, back up photographs, reorganize luggage and confirm the following day's airport transfer.
