The Ngorongoro Crater follows: a 600-metre descent onto the floor of the world's largest intact caldera, where an estimated 20,000 to 25,000 large animals live within a single ring of walls. Lion prides, huge-tusked elephant bulls, buffalo, hyena clans, and the flamingo-fringed Lake Magadi are all here, along with one of Tanzania's best chances - never a certainty - of seeing black rhino and completing the Big Five.
Then, deliberately, the safari changes register. The final morning is spent in Mto wa Mbu, a Rift Valley town where more than a hundred ethnic groups farm the same fertile ground beneath the escarpment. You walk through banana plantations and rice paddies, watch woodcarvers and painters at work, ride a tuk-tuk through the back lanes, and eat a Swahili lunch cooked by a local family. After three days of watching animals from a vehicle, meeting people on foot is a genuinely different pleasure - and it is what most guests end up talking about at home.

Day description
The long drive in is removed entirely: a morning flight from Zanzibar to a Serengeti airstrip, a game drive that begins at the runway, and a full afternoon in the Seronera Valley before settling into luxury canvas inside the park.
Morning
An early transfer from your Zanzibar hotel to the airport, where our representative sees you checked in. The light aircraft lifts off the island, crosses the Indian Ocean coast and the long brown sweep of eastern Tanzania, and eventually the Rift Valley opens beneath the wing. Brief stops at other airstrips are normal on this route.
Afternoon
Land at a Serengeti airstrip where your guide and private 4x4 are waiting. The safari begins at the runway - within minutes you are on a game drive, often with giraffe or zebra visible before the propellers have stopped - with a picnic lunch at a scenic site, or a hot lunch at camp if the flight lands early. A full afternoon game drive follows through the Seronera Valley: granite kopjes rising from open grassland, umbrella acacias, and the river loops where leopards drape along sausage-tree branches. Your guide reads fresh tracks and radio traffic, building a picture for tomorrow.
Evening
Arrive at your luxury tented camp as the light softens. A hot shower, a sundowner by the fire, and dinner under canvas. There is no fence between you and the Serengeti; after dark a member of camp staff walks you between the mess and your tent.

Day description
A whole day in one place with no transfer: a dawn session through the river loops and kopje fields, an unhurried midday, and a second session on different ground. Second night at the same camp.
Morning
A dawn departure with coffee in hand: the Serengeti's finest hour, when lions are finishing the night's work, hyenas are heading home, and cheetahs test the cool air before the heat arrives. Your guide follows fresh tracks and radio reports through the valley's river loops and kopje fields, returning to anything promising from yesterday.
Afternoon
Picnic lunch beneath an acacia, or back to camp for a hot lunch and a rest through the heat - the better option for families with young children, and a genuine luxury on a short trip. Hippo pools and the Maasai kopjes are close by for those who prefer to stay out. A second session follows on different ground: woodland edges where leopard rest through the afternoon, open plains where cheetah hunt, or further south if the migration herds are within reach.
Evening
