Species profile

About the bohor reedbuck

The bohor reedbuck is tied to wet ground: floodplain grassland, reedbeds, marsh edges and moist valley bottoms. It is a warm buff colour, heavier-set than a gazelle, and the ram's short horns curve forward into distinct hooks.

It is a lie-up species, resting through the heat in tall grass and feeding morning and evening. When flushed it gives a shrill whistle through the nose and bounds away with the tail raised to show the white underside — the two signals that usually give away its presence before it is seen.

Life in the wild

Behavior & relationships

Behavior

Crepuscular and nocturnal, lying up in tall grass by day. Whistles sharply when alarmed and flees in rocking bounds with the white tail flared.

Social life

Usually a ram with one or two ewes, or small parties; loose aggregations form on good grazing but there is no herd structure.

What makes it remarkable

Special features

Forward-hooked horns on the ram, a bare grey glandular patch below each ear, and the whistling alarm call.
