Up through montane forest to the Ngorongoro crater rim viewpoint, down onto the short-grass plains, through Naabi Hill Gate and on to the Seronera Valley for the first of two nights under luxury canvas inside the park.

Climb through montane forest to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area gate, then trace the crater rim to a viewpoint where the whole 260 square-kilometre caldera opens beneath you - a thrilling preview of Day 5. Descend past Maasai homesteads onto the short-grass plains.

Cross the plains to Naabi Hill Gate, where the horizon dissolves in every direction - "Serengeti" comes from the Maasai word for endless plains, and here you understand why - with a picnic lunch among the gate kopjes while park formalities are completed. The fullest day of the safari: a final sunrise Serengeti game drive eastward, then the 600-metre descent onto the Ngorongoro Crater floor for a game drive among the densest concentration of large mammals in Africa, before dropping into Karatu for the night.
Morning
A final sunrise game drive as you leave the Serengeti eastward - the road out is a game drive in itself, often producing cheetah on the Naabi plains. Re-enter the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and wind up to the crater rim.
Afternoon
Descend the steep access road 600 metres to the caldera floor for your crater game drive. Within its walls live an estimated 20,000-25,000 large animals: lion prides, huge-tusked elephant bulls, buffalo, spotted hyena clans, and the flamingo-edged soda lake - plus one of Tanzania's best chances, never a certainty, of seeing black rhino. Picnic lunch at the hippo-pool site, then continue the crater circuit through the Lerai fever-tree forest and open grassland before ascending the exit road as the light turns gold, and drive down through the highlands to Karatu.
