Package Overview What this trip is, in a nutshell
The 5-Day Tanzania Wild Horizons Private Safari is designed for travelers who want a compact northern-circuit journey without reducing the experience to a rushed checklist. Over five carefully paced days, the route connects Arusha with Tarangire National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater, Central Serengeti and Lake Manyara - four contrasting ecosystems that reveal how varied northern Tanzania can be within one private itinerary.

Tarangire introduces the safari through broad baobab landscapes, seasonal riverine habitat and wildlife that can include elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, antelope and predators. The Ngorongoro Crater then offers a very different setting: a vast volcanic caldera where open grassland, woodland, marshes and soda-lake habitat support a remarkable concentration of animals. From the crater, the journey continues across the Ngorongoro Conservation Area into Central Serengeti, where open plains, kopjes and river systems create strong year-round opportunities to look for resident herbivores and predators. The final day turns toward Lake Manyara and the Rift Valley escarpment, with forest, wetland and lakeshore habitats adding a softer, greener ending to the journey.

The safari is operated privately for the booked party in a pop-up-roof 4x4 safari vehicle with a professional English-speaking guide-driver. Private operation gives travelers more control over game-drive pace, photography stops, comfort breaks and the balance between early starts and relaxed departures. It is especially useful for couples, families, friends and photographers who do not want their daily rhythm determined by unrelated travelers.

Accommodation combines a comfortable Arusha lodge, a welcoming Karatu base used on both sides of the Serengeti sector, and a tented safari camp in Central Serengeti. This balance keeps the package commercially realistic while still giving guests one night inside the Serengeti ecosystem. The standard route works throughout the year; however, travelers primarily interested in Great Migration concentrations can request seasonal rerouting toward Ndutu, the Western Corridor or Northern Serengeti when time and budget allow. Migration movements, predator encounters and river crossings remain natural events and cannot be guaranteed.

Welcome to Arusha: From International Arrival to Safari Gateway

Day description

Arrival day: a private transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport to your Arusha lodge, time to rest off the flight, and an evening safari briefing with your guide-driver. Arusha is the logistical gateway rather than a game-drive destination on this itinerary.

Morning

For guests arriving in the morning, a Splendor Safari representative meets the flight and assists with the transition to the private road transfer. The drive toward Arusha offers a first look at northern Tanzania: cultivated land, roadside settlements and, when weather is clear, views toward Mount Meru.

Afternoon

Check in at the lodge and allow time to shower, rest and recover from international travel. The afternoon is deliberately light: relax in the gardens or pool area, repack safari luggage, charge camera equipment and prepare a small day bag. An optional Arusha cultural or coffee experience can be added for early arrivals.

Evening

Meet your guide-driver for a private safari briefing covering the route, expected morning departure, vehicle setup, weather, wildlife-viewing etiquette, meal arrangements and photography considerations. Dinner is at guests' own expense so arrival times remain flexible.

Baobab Country: Tarangire Game Drive and Karatu Highlands

Day description

A full Tarangire day: morning and afternoon game drives through baobab-studded country and riverine woodland famous for elephants, ending with a climb to the fertile Karatu highlands for the night.

Morning

Depart Arusha in your private 4x4 and drive southwest through Maasai Steppe landscapes toward Tarangire. Once park formalities are complete, the pop-up roof is raised and the safari begins with game-drive loops through riverine woodland, open grassland, baobab-studded country and seasonal water sources.

Afternoon

Picnic lunch at an approved site, then a flexible afternoon game drive watching for elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, impala, warthog and a broad range of birdlife. Lions and other predators are present but their location changes constantly. Later, leave Tarangire and climb gradually toward the fertile Karatu highlands.

Evening

Check in at the Karatu lodge, settle into the gardens and enjoy dinner. The evening is free for rest and an early night because Day 3 combines the Ngorongoro Crater with the transfer into Serengeti.

Caldera to Endless Plains: Ngorongoro Crater and Central Serengeti

Day description

The most varied day of the safari: a dawn descent into the Ngorongoro Crater for a morning game drive on the caldera floor, then west across the Conservation Area and onto the endless plains of Central Serengeti for the night under canvas.

Morning

Leave Karatu early and climb through the Ngorongoro highlands. After conservation-area formalities, pause at a crater viewpoint when conditions allow, then descend the steep access road to the crater floor. The morning game drive explores grassland, marsh, woodland and lakeshore habitats: wildebeest, zebra, buffalo and gazelles are typical, lions and spotted hyenas are regularly seen, and black rhino occur here though sightings are never guaranteed.

Afternoon

Picnic lunch at an approved crater site, a final crater circuit, then ascend the rim and travel west through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area toward the Serengeti, entering at Naabi Hill. The afternoon drive is treated as a transfer with wildlife opportunities along the way rather than a full game drive.

Evening

Arrive at the tented camp in the Banagi area of Central Serengeti, check in and enjoy dinner. After dark, wildlife can move through unfenced safari areas, so staff instructions and escorts should be followed.

Serengeti Dawn: Big-Sky Game Drive and Return to Karatu

Day description

An early Central Serengeti game drive in the soft dawn light around plains, river systems and kopje country, followed by an unhurried transfer back across the Ngorongoro highlands to Karatu.

Morning

Begin with an early Central Serengeti game drive when temperatures are cooler and the light is softer. The guide selects loops around open plains, river systems and kopje country according to current sightings. Resident wildlife may include buffalo, giraffe, elephant, zebra, wildebeest and gazelles; lions, cheetahs, leopards and hyenas are associated with the ecosystem, but no predator encounter can be promised.

Afternoon

Continue wildlife viewing through late morning, then lunch before beginning the journey east across the Serengeti and through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area toward the highlands. Wildlife can still appear along the route; the priority is a safe, comfortable transfer with appropriate stops.

Evening

Arrive back in Karatu and enjoy dinner at the lodge. This second Karatu night avoids pushing the final day into an excessively long Serengeti-to-airport transfer and gives time to rest before the last game drive.

Day description

A closing game drive through Lake Manyara's groundwater forest, wetlands and lakeshore beneath the Rift Valley escarpment, then the drive back to Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport where the safari ends.

Morning

Descend from the Karatu highlands toward the Rift Valley and enter Lake Manyara National Park. The morning drive explores groundwater forest, open clearings, seasonal wetland and lakeshore habitats. Baboons and other primates favour the forest, while elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebra, antelope and hippos may be encountered - and the park is renowned for its birdlife.

Afternoon

Continue the game drive with a picnic lunch at an approved site, then leave the park in the early afternoon and drive toward Arusha. Guests with an evening flight continue to Kilimanjaro International Airport; those extending in Tanzania are dropped at an Arusha hotel or Arusha Airport.

Evening

The included safari service ends after the agreed drop-off. A day room, farewell dinner or post-safari overnight in Arusha can be added, and travelers continuing to Zanzibar can connect by domestic flight.
