You fly to Arusha on the first morning and are on safari by the afternoon. Tarangire opens the trip with thousand-year-old baobabs and elephant herds among the largest in East Africa. Two nights follow in the Serengeti, camping inside the park itself, which puts you on the plains at both dusk and dawn in country famous for lion prides and one of the highest leopard densities anywhere in Africa. The Ngorongoro Crater comes next - a 600-metre descent onto the floor of the world's largest intact caldera, where an estimated 20,000 to 25,000 large animals live within a single ring of walls. Day description
Leave the beach after breakfast and be on safari by the afternoon: a 90-minute flight to Arusha, then west across the Maasai Steppe into Tarangire for an afternoon among baobabs and elephant herds.
Morning
An early transfer from your Zanzibar hotel to the airport, where our representative sees you checked in. The flight crosses the Indian Ocean coast and the dry interior before landing at Arusha, where your guide and the rest of the small group are waiting. A short briefing, and the vehicle heads west.
Afternoon
Drive across the open Maasai Steppe toward Tarangire, with a picnic lunch en route or at the park gate. The park announces itself immediately: thousand-year-old baobabs standing over golden grassland, and the Tarangire River drawing wildlife from every direction. An afternoon game drive follows along the river circuit, where Tarangire's elephant herds - among the largest concentrations in East Africa - come to drink and dust-bathe. Watch for lion draped in sausage trees, and dry-country specials such as fringe-eared oryx.
Evening
Arrive at your budget lodge for a hot shower, a proper bed, and dinner. An easier first night than camping, and a good chance to get to know the people you will be sharing the vehicle with for the next four days.

Pack a 15 kg soft bag for the flight and leave your main case with your Zanzibar hotel - almost all store luggage free of charge. Bring a head torch and a warm layer: tonight is comfortable, but tomorrow night in the Serengeti is not.

Day description
Up through highland forest to the Ngorongoro crater rim, down onto the short-grass plains and through Naabi Hill Gate into the Serengeti, ending at a public campsite inside the park with tents already pitched.
Morning
An early breakfast, then climb through highland forest to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area gate. The road traces the crater rim, with a stop at a viewpoint where the entire caldera opens beneath you - a first look at Day 4. Descend past Maasai homesteads and grazing cattle onto the short-grass plains.
Afternoon
Cross to Naabi Hill Gate, where the horizon dissolves in every direction - "Serengeti" comes from the Maasai word for endless plains, and here the name explains itself - with a picnic lunch among the gate kopjes while park formalities are completed. Your first Serengeti game drive follows, working toward the Seronera Valley: granite kopjes rising from open grassland, umbrella acacias, and river loops where leopards drape along sausage-tree branches, with your guide following fresh tracks and radio traffic as the light softens.
Evening
Arrive at the public campsite inside the park, where your tents are already pitched and dinner is cooking. This is the night people remember: no fence, no light for a hundred kilometres, hyenas calling in the dark, and a star field that genuinely stops conversation.

Day description
A whole day given to game viewing with no transfer: a dawn session in the Seronera river loops and kopje fields, and a second session on different ground in the afternoon. Second night at the same campsite.
Morning
A dawn departure - the Serengeti's finest hour, when lions finish the night's business and cheetahs test the cool air. Your guide works the valley's river loops and kopje fields, returning to anything promising from yesterday afternoon. This is the most productive session of the whole trip and it is planned that way.
Afternoon
Picnic lunch at a scenic site, or back at camp for a rest through the heat if the group prefers - the hippo pool at Retima is a popular midday stop, as are the Maasai kopjes with their long views over the plains. A second game-drive session follows on different ground: woodland edges where leopard rest through the afternoon, open plains where cheetah hunt, or further south if the migration herds are within reach. With no transfer today, the whole day belongs to game viewing.
Evening
Back to camp for dinner around the fire. Second nights at a campsite are always better than first ones: you know where everything is, the group has settled, and the evening stretches out.

Second night at the same public campsite inside Serengeti National Park, all equipment provided. Two nights inside the Serengeti is what separates this from cheaper day-trip alternatives: two dawns on the plains, and no transfer between them.
In a shared vehicle it helps to agree the day's priorities at breakfast. If someone in the group is desperate for leopard and someone else for cheetah, your guide can usually plan a route that serves both - but only if you say so early.

Morning
A dawn game drive as you leave the Serengeti eastward - the road out is a game drive in itself, often producing cheetah on the Naabi plains - then climb into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and descend the 600-metre access road to the caldera floor.
Afternoon
Within these walls live an estimated 20,000-25,000 large animals: lion prides, huge-tusked elephant bulls, buffalo, spotted hyena clans, and the flamingo-fringed Lake Magadi, plus one of Tanzania's best chances, never a certainty, of seeing black rhino. Picnic brunch at the hippo-pool picnic site, one of the most memorable lunch spots in Africa, then final loops through the Lerai fever-tree forest and across the crater grasslands before ascending the exit road and dropping into the cultivated highlands of Karatu.

Crater mornings are cold - often below 10 degrees C on the rim - while the floor warms quickly. Dress in layers you can shed. Vehicles are limited to six hours on the crater floor by regulation, which is exactly why the early start earns its place.

A closing morning in Lake Manyara's groundwater forest and flamingo shallows, then east along the Rift escarpment to Arusha and the flight back to the island.
Morning
A short descent from Karatu brings you to Lake Manyara's gate. The game drive begins in lush groundwater forest fed by springs from the escarpment, alive with baboon troops and blue monkeys, then opens onto the lake shore where flamingos, pelicans and storks gather seasonally in their thousands.
Afternoon
Work the acacia woodland between forest and shore - the park that made tree-climbing lions famous, where elephant and giraffe move quietly through the same groves - with a hot picnic lunch beneath the Rift wall before exiting the park. Then drive east along the Rift Valley escarpment to Arusha, where your guide sees the group checked in for the flight and says goodbye. The aircraft climbs east over the Maasai Steppe toward the coast.
Evening
Land in Zanzibar and transfer back to your hotel - sand underfoot again, with the crater floor and the Serengeti plains still fresh from the last few days.
