Package Overview What this trip is, in a nutshell
The Classic Northern Circuit is Splendor Safari Company Limited's answer to the most common request we receive in Arusha: "We have limited time - show us the very best of Tanzania." In five carefully engineered days, this private safari threads together all four of the country's signature northern parks - Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti, and Lake Manyara - with a night inside the Serengeti itself at its heart.

The sequencing is the secret. Tarangire opens the safari with giant baobabs and some of East Africa's largest elephant herds. On day three you descend into the Ngorongoro Crater at dawn - before the crowds - and then continue across the crater highlands onto the Serengeti's endless plains, sleeping that night under luxury canvas deep inside the park. This puts you on the plains for both sunset and sunrise, the two hours most day-visitors never see. Lake Manyara's groundwater forest and flamingo shallows provide a gentle, beautiful finale on the way home.

Wildlife possibilities cover the full northern cast: elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, buffalo, giraffe, hippo, and - with luck in the crater - the critically endangered black rhino, completing the Big Five. Between roughly December and March, the Great Migration typically occupies the southern and central Serengeti, directly on this route. No sighting is ever guaranteed in the wild; what this itinerary guarantees is maximum time in the right places, guided by someone who knows how to use every hour.

You travel entirely privately: a dedicated 4x4 Land Cruiser with pop-up roof, and a professional English-speaking Tanzanian guide-driver whose timing and route decisions shape each day. Start before dawn, linger at a leopard, skip a stop, add one - the safari answers to you alone.

Accommodation balances comfort with location: a welcoming Arusha lodge, a warm Karatu country inn on two nights, and one prized night at a luxury tented camp inside the Central Serengeti - the mid-range formula at its best.

The itinerary flexes with the seasons: in the green months we tilt the Serengeti day toward the migration's southern concentrations; in the dry season we work the rivers and waterholes where wildlife gathers. Whatever your dates, the circuit is shaped around conditions on the ground.

Day description

A full day in Tarangire among thousand-year-old baobabs, the river circuit and the Silale Swamp fringes, then the climb up the Great Rift Valley escarpment into the cool highlands of Karatu.

Morning

Afternoon

Game drive along the river circuit, where Tarangire's famous elephant herds - among the largest concentrations in East Africa - come to drink and dust-bathe, with a hot picnic lunch at a shaded site overlooking the valley. Late afternoon, exit the park and climb the Great Rift Valley escarpment into the cool highlands of Karatu.

Crater Dawn to Serengeti Dusk - The Circuit's Greatest Day

Day description

The biggest day of the circuit: a pre-dawn descent onto the Ngorongoro Crater floor, then west across the highlands and through Naabi Hill onto the endless plains, ending under luxury canvas deep inside the Serengeti.

Morning

Pre-dawn departure to be among the first vehicles down the 600-metre descent road as mist lifts off the Ngorongoro Crater floor. Within the caldera's walls live an estimated 20,000-25,000 large animals: lion prides, huge-tusked elephant bulls, buffalo, hyena clans, and the flamingo-edged soda lake - plus one of Tanzania's best chances (never a certainty) of seeing black rhino.

Afternoon

Ascend the crater in late morning and continue west along the rim, pausing at a viewpoint over the full caldera before crossing the Malanja Depression, where Maasai herders graze cattle beside zebra, with a picnic lunch en route at the rim viewpoint or the Naabi Hill kopjes at the Serengeti gate. Then enter the Serengeti and turn the drive to Seronera into your first game drive on the endless plains - "siringet" in the Maasai language - where granite kopjes, umbrella acacias and resident big cats set the scene as your guide works toward camp.

Evening

Arrive at your luxury tented camp inside the park. Sundowner by the fire, dinner under canvas, and a night of hyena whoops and distant lion - the Serengeti's own soundtrack.

Serengeti Sunrise - Golden Hours on the Endless Plains

Day description

A dawn game drive through the Seronera Valley's river loops and kopje fields, then an unhurried game-drive crossing eastward past Naabi Hill and back over the Ngorongoro highlands to the familiar Karatu inn.

Morning

Dawn game drive from camp - the Serengeti's finest hour, when lions finish the night's business and cheetahs test the cool air. Your guide follows fresh tracks and radio reports through the Seronera Valley's river loops and kopje fields, famous for one of Africa's best leopard densities.

Afternoon

Hot picnic lunch at a scenic Seronera site, with time at the visitor information centre if you wish; between December and March the morning can instead push toward the migration herds and calving grounds on the southern short-grass plains. Then game-drive slowly eastward across the plains to Naabi Hill - the exit road often produces cheetah - before re-crossing the Ngorongoro highlands as the light turns gold and Maasai cattle head home.

Evening

Return to the familiar comfort of your Karatu inn: hot shower, garden sundowner, and a well-earned dinner.

A morning game drive through Lake Manyara's groundwater forest, flamingo shallows and acacia woodland, then the drive along the Rift Valley escarpment to Kilimanjaro International Airport with comfortable margin for check-in.
