About the nile crocodile

Nile crocodiles are ancient-looking ambush predators adapted equally well to waiting, swimming and explosive attack. At Serengeti river crossings they target migrating ungulates, while on the Rufiji they can be observed basking on sandbanks from a boat.

They are wild, powerful animals and should never be approached on foot at an unprotected riverbank. Responsible guides maintain distance and read local water conditions carefully.

Behavior

An ambush hunter that regulates body temperature by moving between water, shade and sun. Females guard nests and may carry hatchlings gently in the mouth.

Social life

Often gathers at productive pools and basking banks, with dominance based largely on size. Maternal nest and hatchling care is unusually developed for a reptile.
