Mara River Migration: 5-Day Private Tanzania Safari

Mara River Migration is a focused five-day private safari built around one of the natural world's most extraordinary events. From roughly late July to early October, the Great Migration's herds gather in the far north of the Serengeti, and the Mara River becomes the stage for their most dangerous decision. Splendor Safari Company Limited designed this itinerary to place you there, with a night inside the Northern Serengeti minutes from the crossing points and a full dawn vigil at the river.

The route reaches north quickly and deliberately. Tarangire opens the journey on Day 1 with baobabs and elephant herds, the Central Serengeti follows with its lion and leopard country, and then you push into the Kogatende and Lamai region where the river runs. On the return, the Ngorongoro Crater provides a magnificent closing act - a dawn descent into a collapsed volcano holding one of the densest concentrations of large mammals in Africa.

Wildlife possibilities are exceptional in both quantity and drama. In season, the north fills with wildebeest and zebra columns, with Nile crocodiles waiting in the river and lion prides working the margins. Year-round, the route offers elephant, buffalo, giraffe, cheetah, hippo, and - with luck in the crater - the critically endangered black rhino. No sighting is ever guaranteed, and no honest operator promises a river crossing: the herds move on their own schedule. You travel entirely privately in a dedicated 4x4 Land Cruiser with pop-up roof, led by a professional English-speaking Tanzanian guide-driver. Accommodation is authentic and well-placed: a garden lodge in the Karatu highlands, a tented camp inside the Central Serengeti, a camp within reach of the Mara River itself, and a tented camp near the crater rim. You sleep inside the wilderness on three of four nights, which is where the safari's value truly lies.

Seasonal flexibility is built in. Outside crossing season the same five days are reshaped around wherever the herds actually are - the calving grounds of the south between December and March, or the Western Corridor in the June transition - so your safari always follows the animals rather than a printed map.
