The itinerary is point-to-point by design. You fly from Dar es Salaam to a Serengeti airstrip on the first morning, and your guide and vehicle meet the aircraft. The Central Serengeti - the Seronera Valley, with its granite kopjes, river loops, and one of the highest leopard densities in Africa - fills your first afternoon and the following morning. You then cross to the Ngorongoro highlands, and on the final morning descend 600 metres into the crater itself before flying on to Zanzibar that afternoon.
The Ngorongoro Crater is the reason this short itinerary punches so far above its length. An estimated 20,000 to 25,000 large animals live inside a single collapsed caldera: lion prides, huge-tusked elephant bulls, buffalo, spotted hyena clans, flamingos on Lake Magadi, and one of Tanzania's best chances - never a certainty - of seeing black rhino. Combined with the Serengeti's big cats, three days here can realistically produce the Big Five.
Sightings are never guaranteed in the wild. What flying buys you is time: the two days a road safari would spend travelling become two days of game viewing, and every hour of daylight is spent where the animals are rather than on a highway.

A dawn game drive through the Seronera Valley - the single most productive session on a two-night safari - then east across the plains past Naabi Hill and up into the Ngorongoro highlands to a luxury farm lodge, positioned for tomorrow's pre-dawn crater descent.

A dawn game drive - the Serengeti's finest hour, when lions are finishing the night's work and cheetahs test the cool air before the heat arrives. Your guide works the Seronera Valley's river loops and kopje fields, returning to anything promising from yesterday afternoon. On a two-night safari this is the single most productive session, and it is planned accordingly.
Afternoon
Continue east across the short-grass plains toward Naabi Hill, where cheetah are frequently seen on open ground, with a picnic lunch among the gate kopjes and time to climb the short trail for the view before exiting the park. Then climb into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, tracing the crater rim as the light turns gold over the Malanja Depression and Maasai cattle head home. There is usually time for a rim viewpoint stop - a first look down at tomorrow morning from 600 metres above it - before descending into the highlands.
