The camps and lodges we favour are the ones you would struggle to find from the air. They are built low and from what is already there — local stone, thatch, timber and canvas — and shaped around the trees rather than clearing them.
Practically, that looks like: solar arrays and battery banks instead of a generator running all night; water heated by the sun or a wood-fired boiler; drinking water filtered and refilled on site so there are no plastic bottles anywhere; grey water treated and reused on the gardens; waste sorted and carried out of the park; and staff hired almost entirely from the surrounding villages.
Many sit on community concessions, which means a fixed fee for every guest-night goes directly to the villages that own the land, on top of the park fees that fund anti-poaching. It is the clearest link there is between a holiday and the survival of the place you came to see — the land is worth more standing than it is farmed.
